Our Part Time Life in Oregon: Balancing Bi-Cultural Living
Introduction: Back in Oregon
Hey, fellow adventurers! It’s Brighton here, checking in from our sunny summer life in Oregon. As many of you know, Kat and I split our time between Mexico and Oregon to enjoy the best of both worlds. We call ourselves Rain Birds, chasing the ideal weather year-round. Today, we’re diving into our life in Oregon, showcasing our urban farm, the cozy Portland home, and everything that keeps us busy.
Welcome to Wild West Farm
Let me introduce you to Kat’s pride and joy, the Wild West Farm. This urban oasis is where she spends most of her time when we’re in Oregon. Despite being a small urban farm, it’s brimming with life and produce. From a hundred tomato plants to fig trees and even a kiwi plant, it’s a gardener’s dream.
The farm’s bounty doesn’t stop there. We have a variety of berries, squashes, and even some exotic plants like bananas and grapes. Kat is especially fond of her Iris collection, which blooms beautifully in spring. And yes, we have wildlife visitors too. Hummingbirds, sparrows, and even the occasional mouse or mole share this space with us. Kat believes in organic farming and is happy to share some produce with these little critters.
Rental Property & Baby Goats
Now, let’s talk about our rental property, which is right next to our farm. This double lot has been an exciting addition to our lives, though it’s added some complexity too. Our tenant here has adorable baby goats, which she takes to goat parties. It’s quite a sight!
Owning this rental property, along with our homes in Portland and Mexico, has been a challenge. Growing up, I had to help my father with his apartment maintenance every weekend, which left me with some mixed feelings about property management. Thankfully, I’ve been able to talk through these issues with my therapist. If you’re considering therapy, online options like BetterHelp can be a great resource.
Welcome to Our Portland Home
Our Portland home, located in the Hawthorne district, is a charming Craftsman bungalow over a century old. It’s a cozy space, though quite different from our house in Mexico. Here, we have just one bathroom compared to the multiple luxurious ones we enjoy in Mexico.
The neighborhood is vibrant, with Hawthorne Boulevard just a short walk away. It’s quintessential Portland, filled with secondhand shops, eclectic restaurants, and lively bars. We love the mix of urban life and the peacefulness of our home.
Comparing Homes: Mexico vs. Portland
Living in two distinct places offers a fascinating perspective on home life. Our Portland home is nestled on a small lot, a stark contrast to our spacious Mexican property. In Mexico, we enjoy more room and multiple bathrooms, which feels like a luxury when we return here.
Despite these differences, each home has its unique charm. Our Portland house has a lovely backyard, a perfect spot for relaxation and gatherings. The vibrant neighborhood adds to the appeal, making it a place we cherish.
Our Neighborhood: Hawthorne District
The Hawthorne District is one of Portland’s gems. It’s a hub of creativity and community, with its quirky shops and bustling cafes. We love being part of this vibrant neighborhood, where there’s always something happening.
From street fairs to local events, the district never disappoints. It’s a place where we can enjoy the best of urban living while still being close to nature and the comforts of home.
Portland Street Fair & Local Events
One of the highlights of living in Portland is the street fairs. Recently, we attended the Portland Street Fair, where the streets transform into a lively marketplace. It’s a celebration of local businesses and artisans, and we always have a blast exploring the stalls and enjoying the festivities.
These events remind us of the community spirit in Portland. It’s a place where creativity thrives, and there’s always something new to discover.
Brighton’s Travel Plans and Upcoming Content
As much as we love Portland, our travels don’t stop here. I’m planning a trip to Oaxaca soon, where I’ll be recording interviews and attending the Oaxaca Food and Wine Festival. It’s an exciting opportunity to explore new content and share our experiences with you.
While I’m away, Kat will hold down the fort in Portland, taking care of our dogs and enjoying the Oregon summer. Stay tuned for more updates and stories from our adventures.
Inside Our Portland Home
Our home in Portland is a cozy sanctuary. The front porch is a favorite spot for morning coffee or evening dinners. Inside, the sunroom is a cherished space, especially during the sunny summer months.
The kitchen is open and social, perfect for hosting friends and family. It’s a place where we can cook and connect, just like in our Mexican home. Each room has its character, making it a welcoming place to return to after our travels.
Summer Projects & Honey-Do Lists
This summer has been filled with projects around the house. From rebuilding parts of the garage to refinishing hardwood floors, there’s always something to do. It’s been a productive season, and we’re proud of the improvements we’ve made.
These projects keep us busy, but they also enhance our home. It’s rewarding to see our efforts pay off and create a space that’s truly ours.
Vacation and Social Events
Despite the busy summer, we’ve made time for vacations and social events. A week in the mountains was a highlight, offering a chance to unwind and enjoy the beauty of nature. Wine tasting trips have also been a delight, exploring Oregon’s wine country with friends and family.
These moments of relaxation and connection are what make our summers in Oregon special. They provide a balance to our busy lives and remind us of the joys of living here.
Social Life in Portland
Our social life in Portland is vibrant and fulfilling. We’ve made many friends through our connections in Mexico, and it’s wonderful to see them here. Dinners, happy hours, and casual gatherings fill our calendar, keeping us connected and engaged.
These friendships enrich our lives and make our time in Portland even more enjoyable. It’s a city that fosters community, and we’re grateful to be part of it.
Upcoming Oaxaca Adventures
Looking ahead, my trip to Oaxaca promises new adventures. I’ll be exploring the local culture, food, and wine, capturing it all for upcoming content. It’s an exciting opportunity to dive deeper into this vibrant region and share it with you.
Stay tuned for updates and stories from Oaxaca, as we continue to explore the world and bring you along for the journey.
Reflecting on Our Bi-Cultural Lifestyle
Living part-time in Mexico and Oregon offers a unique perspective on life. We’re constantly balancing two cultures, two homes, and two lifestyles. It’s a dynamic way of living that keeps us on our toes and enriches our experiences.
Each place offers something different, and we cherish the diversity and opportunities this lifestyle provides. It’s a journey of discovery, growth, and endless adventure.
