Getting a driver’s license in Mexico is pretty easy – but I’ve learned that it’s different in each state. So this is my experience in La Paz, Baja California Sur.
For a 50 year old guy with a license from the US and a permanent residency card, this is what I needed to get my license:
1) My existing US driver’s license (they don’t take this, just look at it.)
2) My Permanent Residency Card
3) A blood test showing my blood type
4) Proof of address (my CFE bill.)
In other states, I’ve heard of these differences:
1) You may need to take a driving test, most commonly just parallel parking
2) You may need to take a written test, sometimes only in Spanish.
3) You may get your blood drawn at the place where you get your license.
If you’re over a certain age, you may need a doctor’s exam.
I was really hoping this would be the definitive way to get a Driver’s License in Mexico, but it turns out there are lots of variables. So this is more the story of how I got my license.
