Mexico has a high murder rate. That’s a fact. Should it scare expats or retirees looking to move to Mexico? In my opinion, no. In this video, I share why I think that. I don’t believe that moving to Mexico is a fatal move – as long as you are smart about it.
Violence in Mexico is mostly isolated to people who are somehow connected to cartels. Either being part of the cartels, in the drug trade, politicians/police/judges/military who oppose the cartels or even businesses that are paying the cartels for protection. If you’re not one of those things above, you’re probably in less danger in Mexico than you are in the USA.
Although expats have been murdered in Mexico, it is very uncommon. I do not mean to minimize these incidents, but I’d think of it as being in the USA and avoiding malls, concerts, schools, movie theaters, etc – all places where there have been mass shootings, but overall, these places are safe places.
Except for a few states (Mexico has 32 states overall) and a few very, very dangerous cities, Mexico is safe.
Currently at the beginning of 2023, violence is very high in Sinaloa because the federal government arrested the son of El Chapo. 29 people were killed in the battle between the cartel and government soldiers.
