Some Things in Mexico Are SO FRUSTRATING!

I’m a pretty tranquilo guy, but sometimes trying to get simple things done in Mexico is really frustrating. Not because there’s anything wrong with the way things work in Mexico it’s just that, as an outsider, I’m not familiar with how things work.

When you move to Mexico, you need to expect that things will work differently and sometimes having a good grasp of the Spanish language is more important than at other times.

Buying shoes in Mexico this week proved to be one of those times where my limited Spanish language skills left me high and dry.

For instance, I learned that “talla” means size when it comes to shoes and clothing, but “tamaña” means size when it comes to things like ordering coffee. The good news is that if you care to learn Spanish, experiences like this can burn these words into your memory!

I also learned that shoe sizes are mostly in the 20’s (except if your foot is size 12 in the US, and not many Mexicans have feet that big) so the sales people drop the 20 and refer only to the second digit.

But the good news is the night ended on a high note with a new pair of shoes, a new delicious restaurant 2 blocks from our house and meeting some new friends.
