A number of commenters recently have mentioned how moving to the Philippines or Thailand would be a better idea than moving to Mexico because dollars stretch further in SE Asia. However, I’ve been to Thailand and I will never forget being on an airplane for nearly 24 hours (including a Tokyo layover.) SE Asia is an amazing place to visit, but it’s really far from the US and Canada.
There are 161 direct flights each day from the US to Mexico – and zero direct flights to Thailand.
If you still have family obligations (or just a desire to visit often) then Mexico is a much more convenient location.
